Monthly Archives: December 2010

Before I reveal my “Best Of” lists for the year, I’ma let off some rounds in honor of the new one… Take a tour of the latest, freshest sounds direct from the hottest in Hip-Hop and R&B (below) before they hit the streets. From there you can vote for your favorite tune in the poll at the bottom of the post. Remember where you heard ’em first & have a happy, healthy new year MF! Cheers.

Featured my friend Therese Ohrvall’s gloomy film noir-inspired photography awhile back when she shot me for her chilly series, “Making Friends.” Now she’s teamed up with Finnish photog, Joel Jagerroos, to become Scandinavia’s new force to be reckoned with. Therese+Joel‘s moody work can currently be seen in The Wall Street Journal with other projects in the works. Peep their new joint website here. It’s like watching an Ingmar Bergman flick without having to sit through it!

“Like a Tattoo” – Droop-E

For such a youngin’, Earl “Droop-E” Stevens, Jr. sure knows his parents music well. Well enough to mine samples from Sade’s classic catalogue of atmospheric easy listening for his latest effort aptly titled Black Diamond Life. It’s especially wild to think when considering he is Bay Area legend, E-40’s son; who himself isn’t the first person you think of listening to the smooth operator. The mix is undoubtedly one of the best underground EP’s from the past year. Hear what I mean by downloading the free mixtape here. Listen to sample tracks above/below and remember where you heard it first MF.

Former industrial/fashion/furniture designer, Pernilla Philip, and one of my favorite stylists and fellow Swedes, “Decida”, have collaborated to create a funky new jewelry line called Philip van de Roq. You may recognize some pieces from Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” video or her appearance on Gossip Girl. Am loving the Joan of Arc/tribal fusion all the way down to the campaign’s model whose look is half Zhane, half 90’s Me’Shell Ndegeocello.

The 10 for S/S 2011

Smoke & Mirrors’ curated list of highlights from the S/S ’11 collections arriving in stores soon

Remember S/S ’11? Ha. You know? The season that will hit stores before you know it. Now is the perfect time to roll out my favorites from the Spring/Summer 2011 RTW collections because who really cares about Pre-Fall anyway? Winter just fucking started. Come on now! Think of this as a friendly reminder.

10. Peter Pilotto / Spring 2011 / London Fashion Week
Christopher De Vos and Peter Pilotto make the lightest, funkiest clothes on the planet. The cult line is no longer one to watch but one to follow.

9. Julian Louie / Spring 2011 / New York Fashion Week
Julian Louie knows exactly how to craft a pristine collection. No need for 30+ looks when you can get it right in ten. Tassels, ties, patchwork and paper-like folds make Louie’s latest outing his best yet. And those shoes… drool.

8. Theyskens’ Theory / Spring 2011 / New York Fashion Week

Practicality at its finest. My favorite silhouette of the season’s undoubtedly Olivier’s upfront shoulders and flared bottoms. And for a reasonable price? I’m sold.

7. Mary Katrantzou / Spring 2011 / London Fashion Week

Room with a view is an understatement. Book me one asap.

6. Christopher Kane / Spring 2011 / London Fashion Week
It was looking like a Spring whiteout… (as if we didn’t get enough snow this winter)… that is, until Kane joined the party. Call him neon gold.

5. Prada / Spring 2011 / Milan Fashion Week
For the first time in a long while, I am impressed by Miuccia’s play with Josephine Baker shapes and Wonka colors. Does this mean scrubs are now appropriate daywear?

4. Roberto Cavalli / Spring 2011 / Milan Fashion Week
I’m not ashamed to admit how fantastic Cavalli’s 40th anniversary show truly was. The detailing could kill even the most studied seamstress, the python could bankrupt a small village, and the sex appeal could turn a boy to a man. Do you see those lace-up bellbottoms? Done, done, and done.

3. Lanvin / Spring 2011 / Paris Fashion Week
As if Lanvin weren’t solid each and every season, Elbaz stuck to the script to much success.

2. Emilio Pucci / Spring 2011 / Milan Fashion Week
Peter Dundas surprises me every season. For a brand known for its hysterical LSD-induced prints, the Swedish designer has turned the 60’s line onto its head whilst keeping true to its boho-trip roots. We commend you.

1. Haider Ackermann / Spring 2011 / Paris Fashion Week
His best collection to date, one question remains: can the man do any wrong?

See last season’s picks here.

S/S ’11 collection accessories list
coming soon

If you’re in Toronto this Xmas, stop by the windows at the downtown Bay flagship (on Yonge and Queen Street) for some Marie Antoinette-style holiday magic. The Baroque paper wigs worn in the custom art installations were created exclusively for the landmark luxury retailer by the Paper Cut Project based out of Atlanta. You may have seen their work gracing Jeffrey NY’s mannequins or at Hermes‘ store openings in Asia in the past, but for this project they’ve taken to amping up the volume on Mozart’s powdered wig.

World Premiere: “Kush” – Dr. Dre (Feat. Snoop Dogg & Akon)

Call it straight kush or designer weed. The day has finally come where Dre has broken his silence … which hopefully means we’ll hear DETOX in the next decade or two. Did it really take this long to make this?

World Premiere: “Ass On The Floor (Mudafuckr)” – Dirty Money
(Feat. Swizz Beats)

I’m pleased to announce the arrivals of two major although oft-delayed, S&M-endorsed albums: Ciara’s Basic Instinct and Diddy-Dirty Money’s Last Train To Paris. They’ve dropped just in time for the holidaze. View the latest vid from Diddy‘s winter-ready opus above (and yes, Kaleena and Dawn are in F/W ’10 Chanel) and stream Ci‘s (hopeful) next single, “Heavy Rotation” below. Gotta melt that snow some how… I got around to chatting with a friend about my attachment to Diddy this past weekend and we both came to the conclusion that it all comes back to this. I suppose floss doesn’t fade that easily.

Big Boi & The Atlanta Ballet present… BiG

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at Big Boi and the fam’s 2008 ballet production, BiG, straight from the source. Glad to see one of my favorite tracks get the visual treatment. Only wish I could have been there to see it LIVE!

World Premiere: “Ass On The Floor (Mudafuckr)” –
Dirty Money & Swizz Beats

It’s one thing to hate Diddy ’cause he can’t rap, but, Dirty Money‘s another story altogether. He’s toned himself down with two hot babes suited in my favorite Altuzarra season ever (and fucking berets…)!  Listen to their latest buzz single produced by the one-and-only Mr. Swizz Beats-Keys. You hear those drums and gulfstream synths? Shit’ll get you working even if you’re unemployed! Head on over to to sample the Wintour-approved new album now.
